My Labyrinth

My Labyrinth

Why, oh why, you may ask, would I have dug a maze into my back yard.  Well, it's a spiritual thing, of course.  The details depend (somewhat) on your tradition.

There are lots of great websites about labyrinths and about using them.  I used these instructions to build mine, and they were fairly easy to follow.  I just painted the design on the grass with marking paint (the kind of spray paint you'd use to mark spaces in a parking lot, for instance) and then dug out the lines.  We'll eventually fill the trenches with pea gravel, maybe.

Lauren Artress and her organization, Veriditas, have served as consultants at Holy Trinity, in Greensboro, as well as lots and lots of other places.  If you poke around on their website for a while, you can open an interactive online labyrinth to play with instead of doing your work during the day.

There are instructions at this site for drawing a labyrinth, which I thought were particularly simple and helpful.  I'm thinking that these could become my favorite doodles.

I'm still working on a sort of summary of the traditions that have used the labyrinth shape. I'll add it later, and also maybe a reflection or two from my walking trips.
